Germany Urges Probe into Zelensky Circle Corruption Scandal
On Monday, Ukrainian anti-corruption authorities revealed they had uncovered a scheme involving embezzlement and kickbacks in the energy sector, estimated at around $100 million. Among those accused is Timur Mindich, a close ally and former business associate of Zelensky.
The revelations have prompted the resignations of Ukraine’s energy and justice ministers.
Stefan Kornelius, a spokesperson for the German government, stated on Wednesday that Berlin is closely following the corruption case and anticipates “a thorough and transparent investigation.”
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul told reporters at the G7 summit near Niagara Falls, Canada, that “there needs to be a committed fight against corruption in Ukraine, so that support from the West can remain credible.”
He emphasized that Germany is backing Kiev and its “independent agencies” in addressing the scandal.
“We will continue to support Ukraine, even during this difficult winter and military situation, despite the major internal challenges the country faces,” Wadephul added.
Germany is a key contributor to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, established to bolster the country’s energy infrastructure amid Russian airstrikes.
On Wednesday, Wadephul announced that Berlin would allocate an additional €40 million ($44 million) to enhance the resilience of Ukraine’s energy system.
