Europe shows unity with Denmark, Greenland after US names special envoy

(MENAFN) European countries voiced strong support for Denmark and Greenland on Tuesday following the US decision to appoint a special envoy to the Arctic territory.

The French Foreign Ministry stressed that "France therefore reaffirms its respect for the Kingdom of Denmark’s territorial integrity," highlighting the importance of sovereignty and borders under international law. The ministry also recalled that during his June visit to Nuuk, President Macron reaffirmed France's commitment to Denmark and Greenland's territorial integrity.

Belgium joined the chorus of support, with its Foreign Minister noting, "Be it in Ukraine, the DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo) or Greenland, territorial integrity and sovereignty are fundamental principles of international law, enshrined in the UN Charter, that must be respected by all."

Slovenia’s Foreign Ministry echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that sovereignty and territorial integrity must be upheld universally.

The Netherlands highlighted Greenland’s strategic role in Arctic security, a key NATO concern, with Dutch Foreign Minister David van Weel stating, "It is up to Denmark and Greenland to decide on matters concerning Greenland." Portugal also underscored respect for all states’ sovereignty, saying, "We join our voice to our European partners in solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland."

Ireland stressed Denmark’s longstanding cooperative approach toward Greenland. Irish Foreign Minister Helen McEntee said, "I trust that spirit of cooperation continues. The future of Greenland is for Denmark & the people of Greenland to decide."

Earlier, both President Macron and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez had expressed "full solidarity" with Denmark and Greenland after the US announcement. The European Union also reaffirmed its support for the Danish realm.

US President Donald Trump named Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the special envoy, stating on social media that Landry recognizes "how essential Greenland is" for national security and will safeguard allied interests. Greenland’s strategic location and mineral wealth have attracted US attention, but both Denmark and Greenland have rejected any proposals to sell the territory, reaffirming Danish sovereignty.
