Germany calls on Europe to boost defense capabilities against Russia

(MENAFN) German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on Monday urged Europe to bolster its own military capabilities in response to what he described as “Russian hybrid attacks.”

Ahead of a visit to Vilnius, Lithuania, Wadephul emphasized the need for European cohesion and self-reliance in defense. “We must counter the threat from Russia with strong European cohesion,” he said, adding that the decisive factor is “that we are prepared to defend ourselves and our freedom more independently.”

He noted that Germany and Lithuania share the view that only firm, decisive action can deter Russia from further escalation. Efforts include closer cooperation with NATO and EU partners, enhanced monitoring in the Baltic Sea, improved vigilance, and investments in more resilient infrastructure.

Both countries, Wadephul said, also affirm their strong support for Ukraine, particularly during what he described as a “potentially decisive phase of international efforts to end Russia's war of aggression.” He added that a strong Ukraine and a defensible Europe are essential for lasting peace on the continent.

As part of his visit, Wadephul was scheduled to tour Germany’s Tank Brigade 45, stationed in Lithuania to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank. He highlighted that the deployment of German forces abroad for the first time underscores both the seriousness of the current situation and Germany’s commitment to its allies.

The combat unit, officially commissioned in April 2025, is expected to be fully operational by 2027, with 4,800 soldiers and 200 civilian employees.
