EU signals progress toward finalizing Mercosur trade deal

(MENAFN) The European Commission indicated Monday that the EU-Mercosur trade agreement is approaching completion, saying recent discussions have put both sides “on the right track” for a possible signing soon.

At a midday briefing, EU Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho said that technical talks and negotiations over the past two weeks had advanced, raising hopes that the long-delayed deal could be finalized in the near future.

“I don't have any specific date that I can confirm to you. I can confirm, however, that we're on the right track to envisage a signing of the agreement, and we do hope that will take place quite soon,” Pinho stated.

The pact would provide preferential tariffs for South American imports, including beef, poultry, dairy products, sugar, and ethanol, while granting European industrial goods greater access to those markets.

Originally planned for December, the agreement’s signing was postponed due to last-minute objections from member states such as France and Italy, which raised concerns about impacts on agriculture. Opposition has also emerged elsewhere, with European farmers protesting in Brussels in mid-December over potential threats to local agriculture.
