Spain Backs EU Move to List Iran’s Revolutionary Guard as Terrorist Group

(MENAFN) Spain has expressed its support for adding Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to the European Union’s list of terrorist organizations, the Spanish foreign minister said Thursday, emphasizing that Madrid backs “all sanctions” against Tehran in response to its domestic crackdown.

Speaking ahead of a Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels, Jose Manuel Albares described Spain’s position as longstanding and unequivocal. “Spain supports all the sanctions on Iran at this moment,” he said, adding that this support extends “of course those that refer to the inclusion on the list of terrorist groups of the Revolutionary Guard.”

Albares argued that little remained to evaluate given the situation inside Iran. “When we see the situation in Iran, when we see a blind, indiscriminate repression, arbitrary detentions, a situation for Iranian women that worries us terribly,” he said, it was the EU’s “responsibility and, if you allow me, obligation” to act.

The foreign minister also highlighted Spain’s insistence on respect for “freedom of expression and the freedom of peaceful demonstration of all Iranians” and praised the “great courage” of protesters. He called for an end to arbitrary detentions and warned that “any execution would be an authentic red line for Spain and for Europe.”
