EU Seeks Clear Direction from Trump on Tariff Plans

(MENAFN) The European Union has called on US President Donald Trump to refrain from imposing additional tariffs on European goods and to clarify his trade intentions following a recent Supreme Court ruling that invalidated most of his previous measures.

On Friday, the court determined that Trump lacked the authority to enforce tariffs under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). In response, Trump signed a separate order instituting a 10% global tariff under a different law and later indicated plans to raise it to 15%, criticizing the justices who opposed him as “a disgrace to the nation.”

In a statement released on Sunday, the European Commission requested “full clarity” regarding the president’s plans, noting that the current situation does not align with the commitment to “fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial” trade outlined in the EU-US joint statement from August 2025.

“The Commission will always ensure that the interests of the European Union are fully protected. EU companies and exporters must receive fair treatment, predictability, and legal certainty,” the statement emphasized.

The bloc stressed that European goods should not face tariff increases “beyond the clear and all-inclusive ceiling previously agreed.” It added, “Tariffs are taxes, driving up costs for both consumers and businesses, as recent studies clearly confirm.”
