Spanish PM says Spain’s Anti-War Position Driven by Principles

(MENAFN) Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez defended his government’s opposition to the conflict involving Iran, emphasizing that Madrid’s “no to war” stance is grounded in principles and adherence to international law, according to reports.

In an interview, Sanchez stated that Spain’s position represents a consistent foreign policy approach and has garnered recognition beyond national borders. "When we said 'no to war,' there was a wave of pride in being Spanish not only within our country, but also among many societies across the world," he said.

Sanchez dismissed criticism from opposition parties accusing his administration of taking a politically motivated stance. "This war was not provoked by Spain. It was a war driven unilaterally by two nations," he said. "We are not going to resolve the situation of instability in the Middle East with such a flagrant illegality."

He also rejected fears of potential US backlash over Spain’s refusal to support the conflict. "Being an ally of the United States does not mean saying yes to everything," Sanchez said, highlighting that respect for international law has shaped Spain’s position in previous crises, including in Ukraine and Gaza.

The Spanish premier further emphasized that Europe must continue upholding a rules-based international system. "The world is changing, but the values and principles of the European Union should not change," he said.
