France Sends Carrier Strike Group Toward Red Sea

(MENAFN) According to reports, France has deployed its aircraft carrier strike group toward the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden as part of efforts to support maritime security operations in the region, as stated by the French defense authorities.

Officials indicated that the broader situation around the Strait of Hormuz has significant global implications. They also emphasized that France is not directly involved in the ongoing conflict and remains committed to respecting international law as well as national sovereignty principles.

The aircraft carrier *Charles de Gaulle*, accompanied by escort ships, reportedly passed through the Suez Canal and continued its movement toward the southern Red Sea region.

French defense authorities noted that their forces have been operating in a defensive posture since late February and are contributing to a multinational framework involving dozens of countries focused on ensuring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

The deployment is described as part of preparations to better understand operational conditions in the region and to provide additional response options in case of escalation, with the broader goal of strengthening maritime security cooperation.

Officials also stated that the carrier group is intended to help integrate allied capabilities into a coordinated defensive structure aligned with international maritime law. Another stated objective is to reassure commercial shipping operators amid rising regional tensions.

The deployment is presented as separate from other ongoing military operations in the area and is intended to complement existing security arrangements already in place.

Reports further note that tensions in the region have increased following military strikes involving the United States and Israel against Iran, which led to retaliatory actions and disruptions affecting maritime activity in and around the Strait of Hormuz. A temporary ceasefire was later reached through mediation efforts, though longer-term agreements remain unresolved, and additional naval measures have since been implemented affecting maritime traffic in the area.
