Poland’s President Criticizes Zelensky Over Historical Symbolism

(MENAFN) Poland’s President Karol Nawrocki has called for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to be stripped of Poland’s highest state decoration, following controversy over Ukraine’s recent military symbolism decisions.

The dispute centers on a Ukrainian decree that reportedly granted an honorary designation linked to the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) to a special operations unit, with Ukrainian officials describing the move as a revival of historical military traditions.

Nawrocki strongly criticized the decision, arguing that it reflects an attempt to rehabilitate groups associated with wartime violence and said it raises serious concerns about Ukraine’s alignment with European values. He stated that Ukraine, in his view, is not yet prepared for deeper integration into the “European family.”

He further argued that Zelensky’s actions justify reconsidering his receipt of the Order of the White Eagle, Poland’s highest national honor, which had previously been awarded in recognition of Ukraine-Poland relations.

The remarks have intensified political debate in Poland. Former Prime Minister Leszek Miller criticized the Ukrainian decision, describing it as deeply offensive to Polish historical memory.

Former President Lech Wałęsa also condemned the move, stating that it disrespects victims of historical violence and expressing strong disapproval of Ukrainian nationalist symbolism linked to World War II-era events.

Historical tensions between the two countries remain sensitive due to wartime events in which Ukrainian nationalist groups were responsible for mass killings of Polish civilians in areas of present-day western Ukraine during the 1940s. These events continue to influence modern diplomatic relations and periodically resurface in political discourse.

The latest controversy adds to an already complex relationship between Warsaw and Kyiv, particularly amid ongoing geopolitical cooperation and security coordination in the region.
